A sustainable hotel

A model of sustainable tourism in Mallorca’s Sierra de Tramuntana

The Son Net estate dates back to the 17th century and is located in Mallorca’s Sierra de Tramuntana Mountains (a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011). The main manor house was beautifully restored and opened as Gran Hotel Son Net in 1998. From the very first moment, it became one of the island’s most authentic and luxurious historic hotels.

Since that time, the owner has restored the estate surrounding the hotel championing the use of ecological farming methods in the hotel’s kitchen garden and the vineyards, where the indigenous Malvasia and Callet grapes have been planted close to the ancient olive trees that surround the estate. Animals have been re-introduced and sheep, chickens and Mallorquin donkeys now roam the land.

The olive oil, always a main character

Centuries ago, the production of olive oil was the most important crop on the estate.Indeed, the original full sized olive oil press, which would have been operated by donkeys at that time, has been preserved and is featured in the hotel’s Oleum Restaurant (taking the name from the Latin word for oil). The large stone-faced oil store is used as the main serving area in the restaurant.

Currently, Son Net serves guests locally produced olive oil and next year it will harvest its first crop to produce its own ecological olive oil from the olives on the estate.

An impressive palm tree-lined driveway to the hotel opens up into the surrounding gardens and terraces of Mediterranean plants to create the authentic atmosphere of a traditional Mallorquin garden including the ancient cypress tree beside the pool area which is protected and thought to be around 500 years old.

Committed to recycling

Son Net operates a strict recycling policy and supports the local village project which was one of the first on the island. Its mission is to create a sustainable model that reflects the original way in which the estate was farmed and to embrace the protected status of its unique environment so that guests can enjoy the nature and beauty of authentic island life.
